Great Falls has a very colorful history starting with the Blackfeet and Gros Ventre Indians, French Canadian Fur Trappers, Lewis & Clark, the gold rush and mining, ranching and all facets of the wild west. In 1882 Paris Gibson arrived at the site of Lewis & Clark's great falls. Gibson envisioned an important transportation center/townsite and convinced Minnesota railroad entrepreneur James J. Hill that the falls of the Missouri had potential for industry. The real Great Falls water fall is not in the city. To reach the Great Falls of the Missouri, drive north of Great Falls on the Havre Highway, U.S. 87 for two miles. Turn right at a sign that says Ryan Dam, and follow the signs to the dam. The railroad arrived in 1887. Great Falls was incorporated as a city in 1888 and Gibson was elected its first mayor.

Great Falls is known for its western art, primarily Charlie Russell, who has a spectacular western art gallery in his honor here. Lewis & Clark continue to be an influence as the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center was completed in 1998. The Missouri River is an integral part of our community providing recreation, transportation and power from its many dams generating electrical energy for much of this region.
