Education is a big and serious business in Great Falls. The public school system, which boasts a record of having more than 70 percent of its students score above the national average in achievement tests, has 15 elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools and six private parochial schools . If you are enrolling a child in the Great Falls school system for the first time, the following information will be of interest:

Students need a birth certificate and record of immunizations. State law requires written proof of immunization or exemption for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles and rubella. Elementary students new to the area can register at their neighborhood school the week before school begins. Children must be 5 years old by Sept. 10 to enter kindergarten and first grade students must be 6 by Sept. 10 if they are entering school for the first time. Middle school and high school students should call the school they will attend for an appointment with a counselor to review their records and schedule classes. Students new to the district need a record of immunizations and should bring pertinent school records. (Grades 6-8 comprise middle school; high school includes 9-12).

Parents who are uncertain what school their children will attend can call the Great Falls Public School offices at 268-6000, extension 196 for secondary and extension 251 for elementary..
